The first thing that is so impressive is the cleanliness of the renovations. I don't know if this was just because my visit was during the winter vacation period, but I assume not as most Chinese don't get more than International New Year's Day off during this time. There have been a lot of very positive changes.įirst of all, you need to know that the visit was free. This is the second time I've visited Nanjing Museum (between the renovated city wall and what used to be the Nanjing Hilton but now goes under another name). You can spend 2-3 hours here quite easily, so if you want to see everything make it a day trip. They also have exhibits on painting and calligraphy, which I skipped for want of time. I focused on the exhibits in the very grand main building, of which I think my favorite was the complete jade burial suit held together with gold thread (see picture 3). There is also a restaurant / cafe but I would recommend going across the street instead, where you can find some local restaurants, a coffee shop, and fruit vendor. Restrooms are scattered throughout the premises and stocked with toilet paper and German squatters. I waved my passport at an a volunteer and he brought me directly to the counter, where you can also get an English-language audio guide that adds a lot of context to the exhibits.Ī small amount of lockers are offered inside the same building. Get your (free!) ticket in the building to the left of the grand plaza. Aside from the jostling, shoving, traffic, queue-jumping and stepping-on of toes, I enjoyed my time here. Even on a weekend, expect a significant wait. As always, I don’t recommend coming on a holiday. I visited this museum on my own, during the 2019 Labor Day Holiday.

The rooftop terrace offers great views of Zijin Mountain, you can even see the Ming tombs from there. on the upcoming Year of the Dog, religious art, old clocks from Europe and China, more porcelain, etc. At the time of my visit, there were various exhibitions like e.g. The last building is the Gallery of Temporary Exhibitions. On two floors you can see everything from mammoth and giant elk skeletons to Tang dynasty figurines, Ming and Qing dynasty porcelain and artifacts and much much more. Then there is the Gallery of History with its exquisite exhibits covering every period from prehistory to the last dynasty. You can walk around everywhere and take in the atmosphere of the past.

There is even a post office and railway station. It is a life-sized reconstruction of a street with shops and restaurants from the Republican Period (1912 to 1949). There are no explanations in English though.įrom the Gallery of Art you can access the underground Gallery of Scene of the Republican Period, which is my favorite part of the museum. Here you can see calligraphy, paintings and sculptures from various and mostly contemporary artists.

After exiting the ticket office, the next building on the left is the Gallery of Art. Then you can set out and explore the different galleries. Make sure to bring your passport along as you have to show it to the staff at the ticket desk.

At the beginning of your visit, go the the ticket office located in the first building on the left to claim your free ticket. The quality and variety of its exhibits are outstanding. At the end of the museum you can find a place to grab some food but don't rush through because you might miss something, take your time. Surprisingly you'll also see statues of people from other nation's history like the ancient Greek philosopher Plato doing his famous pose from the iconic painting the School of Athens. You can also buy novelty gifts from the past, back before the Chinese invented paper, they wrote on sticks of bamboo tied together by rope as well as other relics of China's past. When I visited there was a Chinese opera show being performed with their painted faces and fancy costumes doing their exaggerated movements. There are large Dinosaur skeletons, large video screens showing the wars China has been involved in and even a street recreated to look like 1920s Nanjing with classic cars and old shops.

Divided into different sections, the museum shows the full history of the city of Nanjing from the days of the Dinosaurs, to ancient China, feudal China to the Republic of China a hundred years ago back when Nanjing was the capital city of China.
